“I think we should have a longer school year,” President Obama said on Monday in response to a question from the Today show’s Matt Lauer concerning our education system. American schools are in session for fewer days than children in most other educationally advanced countries and while lengthening the school year may not be a popular initiative among American students, this is a notion that has been gaining momentum in the education-research community for several years.
One of the biggest barriers to extending both length of the school day and length of the school year is money. While some schools have already taken initiative to extend their school year, many schools around the country have had to cut back their days and summer programs due to recession-related budget problems.
Obama made no mention of where the money would or should come from however.
